Crystalline glazes are unpredictable and difficult to work with, but they have fascinated me and lured me with their siren call for over 15 years. There is something about the depth of this glaze and the presence of crystalline formations in it that is mesmerizing and almost hypnotic.

The crystals though very beautiful in their own right, also suggest other natural forms like ginko leaves, flowers, and even galaxies and microscopic organisms (a scientist once bought my work because he said it really reminded him of things he’d seen under his microscope!).

Each piece is unique and one of a kind because of the natural variability of the glaze which is extremely sensitive to thickness of application, placement in the kiln, firing schedule, etc. (to name a few amongst a host of many variables). Not knowing where or how many crystals will be on the piece is part of the fascination for me. Often there are variations in the matteness or shininess of the glaze and sometimes there are subtle color changes from one firing to another within the same glaze.

Most of my inspiration comes from nature and classic historical forms, though perhaps a bit of my Thai heritage comes through now and again. I love making functional pieces which bring a little bit of grace and beauty to everyday life.
